Steveats: Dunkin’ Donuts Waffle Sandwich

My thumb, for scale.
Debuting a new, semi-regular feature! I tryout questionable food items so that you don’t have to in… Steveats. (Note: Title developed in about 10 seconds of brainstorming.)

After trying some truly ill-conceived food the past couple weeks, it was refreshing this week to return to something that was at least a decent idea, if poorly executed. The Dunkin’ Donuts waffle sandwich isn’t gourmet fast food dining, or much of a waffle really, but it does hit the spot if you’re looking for more of a sweet and savory fast food item. Like their new burrito, it’s not perfect, but it’s edible, which is always a plus.

First things first – The waffle in the waffle sandwich tastes more like a pancake. I got the bacon-egg-cheese variety, but you can swap in ham or bacon, or go meatless. Regardless though, the waffle is kind of soggy, and it has a bit of a maple flavor to it. Not bad, but given that it was a sandwich, I was hoping for more of a crispy waffle that would allow me to hold it and eat it as a sandwich. Instead, the sandwich got squishy and disintegrated in my hands as I attempted to eat it.

Waffle consistency aside, it was an OK fast food option. If I was jonesing for some breakfast eats, then the waffle provides more calories and fill-up than an English muffin, and it has more natural flavor than a lot of those giant, cardboard-like bagels at Dunkin’ Donuts. (Exclusion: If you go to one of the seemingly five DDs left that have a bagel oven, they’re friggin’ delicious when they’re REALLY hot and fresh. However, it’s more of an “employees only” option.) Also, like all of their other sandwiches, the weird, heavily-spiced hash browns are available for an extra 79 cents, which I do encourage.

(Bonus linkage! I wrote about my past experience as a Dunkin’ Donuts employee, and making coolatas, here.)

If you have a request for a future Steveats, leave it in the comments on here or on my Facebook. To check out some of the past Steveats, go here!

  1. How does it hold up vs. The HolyMcGriddle?

    1. The McGriddle is definitely better, although it's not by a landslide. The McGriddle is more filling, so if you want something a bit lighter, but, uh, still syrupy, then go with the Dunkin' Donuts waffle sandwich.
