I have a kitten.

I have a kitten.

Although, to be perfectly honest, The Kitten belongs to my roommate. Minnie (the name of The Kitten) is a little less than a year old, so as a result, she loves to stay up late at night with me, and sleep through most of the day. As a result, I feel like I do have to take some ownership in the cat.

So, yes, I have a kitten. By continually repeating this statement, it invokes in my mind the beautiful "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr. However, The Kitten is more like a consistent, nagging nightmare.

Don't be fooled by how cute she is in the photos I've attached - she is vicious. Lately, her favorite thing to do is to bite and scratch at my toes while I'm playing Starcraft 2 in the living room. This is doubly annoying, since 1) it messes up where I am in the game and 2) the little effer has sharp teeth. She managed to draw blood the last time she bit. What a savage!

Beyond biting at my feet, she also likes to dig her claws in whenever I try to move her from someplace she's not supposed to be. You know, like on my laptop computer. The other week I got a nice gash in my thigh for my efforts. She also likes to do cute things like climbing on top of the couch, jumping on my shoulder, and then clawing at my ear.

Lately, she has also taken to biting the computer cord to my Macbook. On one hand, a dark part of me kind of wants to see what would happen if she bit through it. But, this probably wouldn't go over well with the roommate, and besides, it still is just a cat. (We're both hoping she mellows out as she gets older, which is what happened with my roommate's other cat, Cleo, who is now six or seven years old.) I'm probably going to look into some Apple Bitter or another, similar product to get her to knock it off.

Speaking of the other cat, The Kitten LOVES to chase her. By "chase", I mean that she will try to chase Cleo, who will then hiss at her and smack her in the face. Even though Cleo doesn't have front claws, she's a bit bigger, and just generally more intimidating than The Kitten, who can't meow, just purr.

So anyway. That's the story of me and The Kitten. I'll be back to the regular entries on Baggage on Monday, and switching back to the more normal Monday-Wednesday-Friday production schedule for the game for the rest of the month, hopefully. Lates!

  1. All forgivable. It's too cute not to forgive. You should get a spray bottle with water and anytime it does something wrong, give it a little spritz. It'll learn.

...or it'll stop you breathing while you're asleep.

  2. @ TS - I am worried that the cat will slay me in my sleep. Generally, I close my door when I go to bed, and I don't allow that one in my room when I'm sleeping. The other one is cool though, although it does wake me up at 6:30 a.m. because that's when it wakes up.

  3. I concur, get a spray bottle. That's what I do with butters. Also, does she have any scratching posts to use? And she's chewing so much cause she's teething.
    DON'T HATE THE KITTIEZ

  4. Reminds me of a kitten I had when I was a kid.Looked just like that! I have a scar on my right thigh from kitty claws. Nothing will happen if the cat chews through the cord to your Macbook. My last cat chewed the power cord to my lap top, my ethernet cord and was working through the cord to my printer!
I have to admity kitty sure is cute!

  5. Minnie is exactly like my cat. Oscar chews, he bites, he scratches. It was all a LOT worse when he was a kitten. The spray bottle is a temporary fix for us; he stops until we put it down, and then he's back. A scratching post is also a really good thing.

Now that he's older, he knows what he's doing when he bites us, so he bites really gently to get our attention. He still wakes us up though. If I could do it again, I would deal with the crying and not let him in my bed. OK, not true, but I would try harder.

Found you at Frisky's and wanted to check out a fellow news junkie's blog.

  6. Minnie is cute even if she does sound like a bit of terror. Spray bottles do work wonders and it sounds if she could benefit from a scratching post as well. Definitely train her now before her bad behaviors become ingrained. ...Oh and if by chance she does chew through the electrical cord, remember she has nine lives!

    Happy Weekend!

  7. Ari is at least three and his favorite pastime is gnawing on my ipohne chargers. To date I've spent more on the chargers than on the phone.

  8. I am soooo not a cat person. I just can't get behind a pet that doesn't let me love it, sheds, and poops indoors.

And now I'm picturing you becoming the Crazy Cat Lady from the Simpsons.

  9. @ Danielle - It sounds like the spray bottle is the way to go, then. I'm just worried how it will go over with the roomie, since it is her cat and all.

The next time I'm at Wal-Mart though, I'm definitely picking up a scratching post, since they probably cost like $5 there.

  10. @ Rebekah - Cool, thanks for following! For what it's worth, Oscar is a bad ass name for a kitten. Whether he's named after The Grouch or someone else, Oscar is a name that means business.

Cleo, the other, better behaved cat, is allowed to sleep in my bed with me. She normally does so when my roommate is spending the night at her boyfriend's. Cleo is kind of skittish now though for some reason, and usually just curls up on the bottom portion of my quilt.

  11. @ Ash - Thanks! I wish I could take credit, but she is a short hair cat (according to the roomie), and thus, she handles all of her own grooming.

  12. @ The Empress - True, she'd have eight lives left, probably. Although, she may have used a couple already... She is quite the daredevil.

  13. @ Jenn - Ack! See, I'm afraid of that happening. I have a new, better-paying job, but I hate having to continually buy equipment I lose or break. (I've bought like five USB cables because they're so easy to misplace, and the same with umbrellas, oddly enough.)

  14. @ Alison - See, I kind of like cats, because they're independent and not a lot of work. If it wasn't for The Kitten always trying to crawl all over me and what not, I would have zero to do with either cat. I'd just be there for them when they wanted someone to pet them once a day.

I have a nicer smile than the Crazy Cat Lady, thank you very much :)

  15. @ Jess - My kitty cat mark is on the left thigh; we could be buddies!

I don't know if The Kitten's teeth and claws are strong enough to power through anything yet. I do check the cords when she's working on them, and she doesn't seem to be making any process. Then again, the Macbook cord is made out of some odd plastic that seems impervious to any sort of physical damage. (My suspicion is that Steve Jobs engineered it out of the wax from Satan's collection of Yankee Candles.)

  16. I love kittehs. Mine is, like, two years old, and all he does is sleep and eat. Fat ass Garfield... like, literally, he steals my lasagna. I'm thinking of getting a dog and naming him Odie now.

  17. @ Christina - I am very, very much in favor of the Odie plan. Also, have you seen Garfield Minus Garfield? I'm positive that your cat is better entertainment than Garfield:

  18. Awww. If you're that cute, you can get way with murder! (And I fully expect your naughty little kitteh to try that. I mean, I know I'd acquit!)

  19. @ Sadako - It is cute but deadly. Today, I found it in my roommate's room when I woke up, and it had overturned her garbage bin and ripped up some papers to shreds. Good times, good times.
